Hello Theater Lovers,
Let's discuss what exactly Readers Theater is all about and some of the roles that goes along with it. Readers Theater is a fun and creative way to get people involved in collaboration and community. Here’s everything you need to know about Readers Theater!
1. Readers Theater is NOT memorized and does not have to necessarily be acted out. Participants don't have to worry about memorizing lines or parts, they simply just read off of a script. The voices are the main focus of the readers theater. Actions can enhance a particular meaning but the performer's voices reading the scripts carry the most weight.
2. Scripts are typically sent 2-3 days prior to meeting day for your perusal. You may have a preference for a role, but we cannot guarantee who plays what character as there are numerous factors involved. Roles are typically assigned on the day of meeting.
3. There are different ways you can participate.
The Narrator - The narrator's responsibility is to read the neutral and descriptive parts of the script.
Characters in the Script: The next roles to be filled in Reader Theater are the characters inside the script themselves. The director assigns individual performers to read specific dialogue from the characters. Most scripts include different levels of difficulty. There can be basic, average, or advanced character roles.
The Facilitator/Director – This person will facilitate the artistic choices and tone and style of the reading. The role will be more evident when the play is re-read a second time for performance or in rehearsal. The facilitator/director position will rotate to different members of the group.
4. Group Response Time. After we read a script, we review character objectives, the play’s theme and general personal responses from the material. Because the group dynamic is very important, we ask that we share the time mindfully and keep responses concise.
And lastly, Readers Theaters is fast-paced and fun! Participants will love being thrown into different roles and acting out different characters. Other people will enjoy hearing these stories being read to them as audience members! It's great for everyone in the group. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, ideas or know of other people who might want to join. See you soon!
